Feature of the Week: JL7 Photography!

Bio:

When I first started photography, I never considered the possibility of making it my career, I just knew that I loved taking pictures of flowers, insects, and other pretty things.  Just barely over a year ago, a friend forced me to take pictures of a model with her (she pretty much had to drag me kicking and screaming). I was extremely nervous.  Flowers can’t tell you the picture isn’t flattering, insects do not care about composition, and sunsets won’t make you feel bad about your art.  Needless to say, I was terrified!  However, I went through with it, the outcome was a switch flipped in my brain and I suddenly wanted to do nothing more then photograph people.  Ever since then, 95% of my photographs have been of models and families!  I can’t get enough of it, my mind is brimming with the possibilities of starting my own business and doing this for a living.  Nothing would be more amazing then to be able to earn a living doing something I am so passionate about.  I have learned so much over this past year, I have worked with some amazing models and photographers, and most importantly, I am having more and more fun with photography everyday!  My work is my art and to have your art get great feedback is just an amazing feeling, my favorite comment I recently received was that my “photographs have a great sense of storytelling”, that just blew me away! I am so lucky to have the supportive network of friends and family that I do, without them, there would be no JL7 Photography.

** On a side note, Jess took some shots of me at Neko 2010 and they were GORGEOUS! :) I’m so looking forward to working with her this year. If you live in the VA beach area, she comes highly recomended. ^_^**

Augustana Interview by Jenn Lloyd

Agustana released their new self titled album in April and I got the chance to talk with lead-singer Dan Layus about their album, influences and what it means to make it big in music.

Jenn Lloyd: What was the first show you saw?

Dan Layus: I saw Tom Petty with my father when I was about 14 years old. That show is what started my love affair with Tom Petty and helped make Echo my favorite album.

JL: How did Augustana form?

DL: We were just a couple of kids that happened to be lucky in getting a record deal. As for the forming it’s confusing. Long story short, we all went to a school in Southern Illinois. Met when we were 17 years old, dropped out of college, moved back to San Diego.

JL: What made you want to be a musician?

DL: I didn’t really have to think about it. Music was one of the few things that came naturally to me. I got my first guitar when I was 10. My parents couldn’t get me to shut up. When I was younger I wanted to mimic bands that I loved, but as I got older I started to find my own sound.

JL: If you were to have another profession what would it be?

DL: Another question I ask myself. I think I would be SOL. My last paying job was McDonald’s and that didn’t go too well. Especially in this job market I think it would be difficult without music.

JL: What are some influences personally and ones that the band shares?

DL: Springsteen, Dylan, the Beatles, Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac. Nothing original but bands that can put on a great live show and always present heart and energy. The other guys in the band do a lot more searching for new bands. I tend not to listen to music much actually.

JL: You were only at Greenville College for two years yet both your 1st album and band name have to do with the Midwest. Why?

DL: I was very affected by it. I grew up in San Diego and never really traveled before. I got to see a very different part of the country. Beautiful to experience. I had aspired to see more of America and the world. Now I have been to every place you can go many times.

JL: You are married and have two children. How has being in a band on a major label changed now that you have a family?

DL: It changes the urgency you feel in getting things done and making them count. Your kids grow up fast, wife misses you. Time goes by fast. It inspires me to make it all count; can’t just take it slow anymore. I have to be a part of every decision, take it by the reins and makes sure things happen because there are people depending on me.

JL: Augustana has been on a major label since the early 2000’s yet you have mentioned in other interviews that the band still wants to make it big. What does making it big mean to you?

DL: I don’t know about making it big, but we do set the bar high. We would love to achieve what our predecessors have, but we know that takes time.

JL: In other interviews you have mentioned wanting to make it bigger while maintaining your sound, in the vein of Kings of Leon and The Killers. How do you think a band is able to cross into the mainstream world without creating a mainstream sound?

DL: I guess that’s the question. We are certainly trying to do that through this record. That is not necessarily the goal, to have as commercial success as The Killers or Kings of Leon, but capturing their ability to keep their sound while opening to a larger audience is something we are trying to do. If we never get to that point than we never do. It’s always been a grass roots effort of building from the ground up.

JL: Your similarities to Bruce Springsteen in this new record have been mentioned in many reviews. Were you consciously trying to create more classic, Americana sound than with your previous records?

DL: Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born to Run, I listened to them every day for 10 years. It starts to become a part of my song writing and music style, becomes Augustana. We don’t want to be exactly like them [influences]. We want to bring their sound into the next generation. There is a hunger for that, at least I think there is. I know I have a hunger for that.
